At the December Steering Committee meeting, the Connecticut Geographic Alliance presented its annual Friend of Geography Award to Danbury High School Assistant Principal Timothy Salem and the DHS students whose collaborative efforts resulted in the production of the short video “The Promise” which focuses attention on the ongoing devastating situation in Darfur. This award is presented annually to one or more community members who have made an outstanding contribution to geography. Recipients are not usually classroom teachers but have demonstrated a tremendous interest in advancing geography education in Connecticut. Tim and students Kim Ashayeri and Lena Negron accepted the award then showed the committee the latest efforts from the DHS students entitled “Child of Hope.” The new video includes the photography of Mia Farrow as well as music written and performed by DHS students. Tim and his students have given numerous presentations throughout the state about their efforts to draw attention to the genocide in Darfur.
